Sensational?

Write down the first sight, sound, smell, and sensation you experienced on waking up today. Pick the one you’re most drawn to, and write.

First sight: faint glow of daylight through the curtained window.

First sound: my alarm clock–set to a favorite CD, I still want to throw it when it goes off. (Second sound: my husband still blissfully snoring.)

First smell: Smell? What smell? It’s allergy season, I can’t smell ANYTHING!!!

Sensation: Head pounding, sense of dread, really do NOT want to go to work today…I just want to lay still, drift back to sleep while my cat purrs on my stomach.

Aaaaand the way the day has gone so far, I’m still wishing I was home. Really dislike working weekends when the family is all home. But bills must be paid, and I have been unsuccessful in finding a job that does not expect 24/7 allegiance. In health care, you either suck it up or get out. Families and patients don’t have many choices when they’re dealing with illness/injury, so I really should not be griping. Things could be far worse. I could be in the shoes of the young widow who is now facing the rest of her pregnancy without her husband, and raising their toddler alone after a sudden and brief illness. Last year a former classmate died following burn injuries from a flash fire in his garage; that just as easily could have been my husband. We could be grieving the loss of one of our daughters from a motor vehicle crash. So many “what ifs” and “if onlys” these past 2 years. Sooooo, now the sensation is one of thankfulness.  And a bit of shame at my selfishness.

“9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. ” Galatians 6:9-10
